Give us your views on trade agreements with Canada, Mexico and India

Updated: Jan 23, 2023

As the UK prepares for trade negotiations with Canada, Mexico, and India, we are conducting three trade deals consultations

We want to know what you think about the UK’s trading arrangements with these markets and where changes could be made. This information will help in the approach to starting negotiations later this year.

All responses should be submitted via the online call for input platform.

Canada and Mexico

  • Canada This consultation closes at 11:45pm on 12 July 2021

  • Mexico This consultation closes at 11:45pm on 12 July 2021

Since Britain has left the EU and is free to negotiate a next generation of deals that set the global trade agenda, making it easier for businesses to trade, and delivering benefits to the whole of the UK, trade negotiations are going further and faster than ever before. Whilst UK businesses currently benefit from comprehensive trade deals with Canada and Mexico, there are significant opportunities to upgrade these deals, including

  • removing and lowering tariffs for major UK exports like cars and food and drink

  • making it easier for UK companies to do business to trade and invest overseas in major sectors like financial services, business services, pharmaceuticals and food and drink.

  • cementing the UK as an international services hub

India

  • India This consultation closes at 11:45pm on 31 August 2021

Following the Prime Minister’s announcement in May 2021 of the UK’s intent to negotiate a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement with India, the British Government is preparing for this negotiation.

Whilst the UK currently benefits from a strong and long-standing trading relationship with India, this has been strengthened further through the recent launch of an Enhanced Trade Partnership, which provides the framework for the UK and India to enhance and deepen bilateral trade.

Stronger trade links with India will support broader foreign policy interests in the Indo-Pacific region and will pave the way for a deepening partnership between the UK and India, whilst helping shape the global trade agenda in areas like digital trade, women’s economic empowerment and gender equality, the environment and climate change.
