As part of the Border Target Operating Model, the UK government had implemented a phased approach to security controls at the border for sanitary and phytosanitary controls applicable to all imports of live animals, animal products, plants and plant products coming from the European Union and beyond.
Whilst rigorous controls have already been put in place, import checks on medium-risk fruit and vegetables from the EU were due to come into force on 1st January 2025. Following the recent change in government and to ensure new ministers have the opportunity to review the implementation and hear businesses’ concerns, this has now been postponed to 1st July 2025. Until this date, products that fall into this category will not be subject to import checks or charged additional fees.
Following a review from DEFRA, the risk categorisation of certain plant products has also been updated and seven commodity groups, such as apples and pears, have been downgraded from medium risk to low risk. This means they will not be subject to additional restrictions.
